It all began in a garage: Under the name "HELBA Elektronik Baugruppen GmbH & Co. KG", Hans-Walter Zimmermann and Heino Burmester developed their first control mechanism for central locking systems in 1977. Three years later they had six employees; within just a few months, this number had grown to 18. A relocation in 1980 was followed by another just two years later, with the establishment of the company's own development department. The first automated SMD assembly machine in the mid-1980s made outsourcing to home workers obsolete; HELBA's staff had by now grown to 62.
The re-naming of HELBA to Helbako in 1990 was followed by ISO 9000 certification and the construction of a new 6000-square-metre building in Weilenburgstrasse. At the start of the new millennium, the development department was spun off into a separate Development Center; Helbako had 150 employees and the number continued to grow. Helbako created jobs, even in the physical sense: As part of an ambitious building project, a new four-story wing was built in record time in 2003, while every week the number of employees grew.
In 2010, more than 230 people are employed at Helbako, generating sales of some EUR 45 million. The company is certified according to ISO / TS 16949:2009 and has preserved its familiar character despite all changes. The sons of the founders, who manage the company today, are committed to "old-fashioned" values: ongoing change, dynamic development and pioneer spirit. We are simply carrying on our long tradition.
